It's official. My interview with Scott Pelley is in the lead story on @60minutes this Sunday, May 10th. I talk about the coronavirus and the state of science.

Mucosal COVID-19 boosters outperform mRNA shots in preventing upper airway infections
We know this .. we want to know WHEN !!!! https://t.co/ClSn3iBpqx
Use of air purifiers at two daycare centres in Helsinki led to a reduction in illnesses and absences among children and staff
Air purifiers of various sizes and types were placed in two of the city's daycare centres during cold and flu seasons. https://t.co/G6t6TcrZqB
CDC said cases aren't high enough to warrant bird flu vaccines & offering them wouldn't work since uptake would be low.
This isn't necessarily true but also problematic, reminiscent of past instances when public health justified why people aren't worthy of drugs & vaccines. 🧵
We've known about this for months & we are still slow-walking a response. The reasons for this are complex: territorialism, bureaucracy, economics, food security, institutional rigidity, funding, public support, political will, the list goes on.
But they are not scientific.
🚨🚨Wow! In Sharp contrast to feel good press by @CDCgov from Michigan study, w/ NO data, now an excellent report from @utmbhealth@UTMB_SPPH Gregory Gray et al on #H5N1 disease in cows & serology data in people.
As expected & predicted months ago, It’s not a good story. There appears to be asymptomatic infection & missed symptomatic infection in humans. How did a cafeteria worker get infected? Small samples, but clear outcomes. More to be done. Finally!!!
We MUST stop playing games w/ this virus & act NOW to stop it.
Read the paper & ready @amymaxmen story below too.

Colorado is reporting more bird flu cases among farmworkers.
They face unimaginably difficult conditions, exposed to highly pathogenic viruses in the heat without proper protection.
There's now a total of 14 cases in the US. https://t.co/en80TJv8DU
US: Map Shows 17 States With 'Very High' Covid Rates
Some 17 US states have detected "very high" levels of Covid in their wastewater, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

This may knock down one of the barriers to bird flu testing at clinical labs -- the foundation of diagnostics in this country.
It's absurd to rely on the CDC & public health labs alone.
Lots to like about this WHO message. Focus on high-risk public transportation, reference to poor ventilation, acknowledgment of community care, unmasked folks decide to mask, and most of all, the ending: "Live your life and stay safe and healthy" 🙏🏾❤️
Great to see serological surveillance be again appreciated as a critical public health tool for outbreaks (after it was bizarrely neglected for COVID)
Michigan is launching a serosurvey among farm workers.
But we need nationwide background serological monitoring so we are no longer guessing about outbreaks w pandemic potential

Your reminder that:
- Covid and other respiratory diseases are on the uptick
- Airports/ planes are higher risk environments
- Choosing to mask is a great way to protect yourself and others around you who may be vulnerable (I have asthma, wife has cancer).
😷👍🏽
Great piece looking at why the US knows virtually nothing about the current H5N1 bird flu outbreak.
Outbreaks move quickly. Our government agencies do not. It's a problem.

Sweden: Now more sick Swedes are being tested for bird flu.
"All Swedes with flu symptoms who are admitted to hospital are tested for bird flu."
Bird flu is a pathogen with the potential to cause a pandemic among humans..
