22 August 1962. The Beatles were filmed for the 1st time by Granada TV at the original Cavern Club in Liverpool. The filming occurred just a week after Pete Best was sacked from the group. This is the only film of The Beatles at the Cavern Club.
I support @novaramedia but it needs to be better. I've paid to support it for years and will keep doing so, I think it's essential to the left having a media outlet that can actually compete for attention, not just virtue.
- Scale is the whole point. Novara's left-wing peers have mostly come and gone; Novara has survived and grown into something with real reach, over a million YouTube subscribers, tens of millions of views. The perfectly-curated socialist blog you love that 3,000 people read doesn't move politics. A recognised name that reaches millions can. Zeteo UK might get there eventually. Nothing else is close right now.
- No outlet is perfect, and that's not the standard. The Mail and Sun have never satisfied every reader on every article either. "I don't rate one presenter so I'm done with the whole outlet" isn't a serious critique of a media organisation, it's a mood.
- But the Arday episode isn't that kind of complaint, and it can't be waved away as one bad week. Aaron Bastani has now fully apologised, "professionally I erred, but ethically I really screwed up", and that apology matters. But it followed two earlier attempts that made things worse, and it followed comments (including calling Arday a "con man") made in the middle of a racist media pile-on that ended with a man dead. That sequence, instinct first, correction only under pressure, more than once, is what happens when there's no one in the room whose job is to ask "should we run this" before it runs, not after. Or to question "Is that really an apology?"
- That's the actual fix, and it's structural, not personal. Novara needs an editor or a senior producer who isn't one of the founding "mates" and who can hold a line the outlet is accountable to, the kind of function every professional newsroom has and Novara still visibly doesn't. It also needs more voices, and bigger ones, who aren't part of that original circle; there's a lot of left opinion that's never had a look-in. If Novara already have someone doing this role, I would argue they clearly don't.
- And Aaron specifically needs to decide what he is. Is he a Novara exec, or is he a personal opinion columnist whose hottest takes increasingly get read as Novara's position because the two are fused in the public mind? Trying to be both is the structural flaw sitting underneath this specific failure.
I'm saying this because I want Novara to get stronger, not weaker, the left needs an outlet at this scale to succeed. That means being honest when it falls short, especially when the stakes turn out to be this high.
mad. if william salt didn’t get caught at rockliffe then tonda eckert would’ve probably seen the season out being lauded as a genius. now he’ll be known as what he is: a callous cheat
It’s quietly soul crushing that every time I see a piece of art, or a photo, or a video, or a voiceover, or basically anything now there’s a part of my brain dedicated to evaluating whether it’s AI. Slightly but permanently diminished my enjoyment of the world
The quote is easily the worst part. Biggest company in the world proudly admitting to accelerating the apocalypse and asking “what are you going to do about it?”
rob edwards is an entirely fine appointment. not amazing, not catastrophic. just fine.
i think some people are stuck in hoping we should be better than we are. since 2016/17 we’ve been an 8th placed side on average. it’s high time expectations changed to match that imo
