Saw the genius biology homework asking my son about gender and pronouns — with the sweet option to hide it from me. Sent the teacher a letter.

Two days later, she replies: a soft “sorry if he was uncomfortable” and an offer to “chat.” Groundbreaking. My letter to Mrs Barker from Simsbury High School in Connecticut and the Photo with her response below.

“Mrs Barker,

My name is Elvira Syed, and I am the mother of the student , who is enrolled in your biology class this year as a tenth grader. Today was the first day of school, and I was deeply concerned — and frankly outraged — by the homework assignment Derek received, particularly the questionnaire regarding preferred pronouns and where those pronouns should be used.

As a biology teacher, I trust you understand that there are two sexes in the biological world. Derek is my son — a singular human being, born and raised male — and this is evident from his appearance. Therefore, suggesting or normalizing the use of plural pronouns or alternative identities contradicts the very scientific principles that biology is based on, and again, as a biology teacher, you should know that.

Even more troubling is the section of the questionnaire that allows students to choose where their preferred pronouns are used, including the option to exclude their families. By presenting this choice, you are implicitly encouraging students to withhold information from their parents — a practice I strongly object to.

I am also confused as to why, in a biology class, you would need to collect personal information such as my son’s birthday and with whom he lives. This information has already been provided to the school administration through PowerSchool, and it should not be necessary for classroom instruction. Including such questions in your assignment raises concerns about the intent behind gathering details that are unrelated to your subject matter.

As you may know, I have formally submitted a NO CONSENT request to Principal Mrs. Seidel to be placed in Derek’s file, explicitly prohibiting any discussions or interventions related to gender identity without my knowledge or consent. This is not a theoretical concern for me; I lost my daughter, Ilene, to gender ideology, which was introduced and reinforced within Simsbury High School. I will not allow my second child to be subjected to the same influences.

I have also informed the principal that I am forwarding all related materials — including my correspondence and now this assignment — to the Department of Education in Washington for review.

I sincerely hope that my letter will not affect your attitude toward Derek in the classroom and that you will not discuss this letter with him directly. I trust in your professionalism and expect that Derek will be treated fairly and supported in his learning environment.

I respectfully ask that you focus your instruction on biology, not gender ideology. Derek is already facing academic challenges, and what he needs most from his teachers is support in building his knowledge and skills, not confusion about his identity. I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to seeing his growth in your class through stronger academic focus and improved grades.
