In the games industry back in my day (lol Mort's old) you would work on the game for 1-3 years. How tough the days were would accelerate until the final few months were some longer hours. Then the game would ship, and you'd take a break. Then come back and start again.
Then around 2012 or so, things changed. With the introduction of the ability to patch a game, as well as the live service model, all of a sudden the end wasn't actually the end. Your game was out, but it might need a stability patch to get worked on or some DLC to get made. Now the end wasn't actually the end. You might be making DLC for another 6 months to 2 years.
And if you're on a live service game, it depends on what your role is. Maybe you finish your piece of content (think like a champ in League) and you could have that standard pace and take your break. But if you were someone who had to work on everything like a wider system or general oversight, the natural break point was gone. In it's place was a never ending path of moving forward.
There's a bunch of people on TFT from production to art to finalization to publishing, that this is their world now. You give 100% to push out an amazing set like Into the Arcane, and that means it's time to jump right on to the next thing. Every day you spend thinking about what you just shipped or taking time to unwind is 1 less day before the next big deadline.
And if you find yourself in this spot, its a quick way to burn out. People need natural break points and goals and moments of rest, and if you start to perceive your work as a never ending grind, it can get to you. I've seen lots of good devs fall victim to that feeling and realize that's not where they want to end up.
So what can you do? Two major things. The first, is take care of your people. I'm lucky enough to work with folks who just want to do amazing things for players, but that also means they'll prioritize the player experience over their own health, and get right back to the grind. Force them to stop and take a break and enjoy the moment. Give them that natural break the industry used to have.
Second, if you've got good folks, help them know that the goal isn't some made up production schedule. The goal is to make the best game they can with the time they have, and that's it. If they give it 100% and we can't get everything done, that's ok. There's always more to do, and not enough time in the world. So just do what you can. That's enough.
If you see any TFT folks around and are enjoying the set, tell them. You guys enjoying the game gives our team the fuel to keep going.
If any of my team that worked on Into the Arcane is reading this, please go take some time to be you. We're entering the end of the year, the next batch of work will be there. Take care of you for now.
Ok that's it. Happy Friday. Take it easy :)
