Why Aston Villa's appointment of Chema Sanz is another sign of the Emery revolution
Aston Villa's summer has been dominated by talk of transfers, Profit and Sustainability Rules and squad building, but one of the club's most significant additions may not kick a ball.
The arrival of Chema Sanz is another example of Unai Emery strengthening the foundations rather than simply adding to the first-team squad. While supporters may be unfamiliar with the 56-year-old Spaniard, within Spanish football he is regarded as one of the game's most respected coaches and tactical minds.
Sanz arrives after leaving Osasuna, bringing with him more than two decades of experience across Spanish football. His coaching career has included spells at Valencia, Atlético Levante and Sheffield United, where he earned praise for his tactical preparation, detailed training sessions and player development. Rather than being a traditional assistant manager, Sanz has built a reputation as a coach capable of improving players on the training ground and translating complex tactical ideas into practical sessions.
That philosophy fits perfectly with Emery.
Throughout his managerial career, Emery has surrounded himself with specialists rather than generalists. Every member of his coaching staff has a clearly defined role, whether in opposition analysis, individual development, tactical coaching or physical preparation. Villa's rise over the past four years has been driven as much by the quality of the staff at Bodymoor Heath as the quality on the pitch.
Sanz's relationship with Emery stretches back many years through Spanish football. Although they have not been long-term coaching partners previously, they have worked within the same coaching circles and share remarkably similar footballing principles. Both believe success begins on the training ground, with meticulous planning, positional discipline and relentless attention to detail.
That is perhaps the biggest reason for the appointment.
Emery demands tactical precision from every player. Villa's defensive line, pressing triggers, build-up structure and rotations are among the most rehearsed in the Premier League. Those standards require coaches capable of delivering hundreds of high-quality sessions throughout the season.
Sanz has developed exactly that reputation.
His experience at Valencia and Osasuna exposed him to clubs where maximising resources was essential. Coaching players to improve rather than relying on expensive signings has become one of his strengths, something that could prove invaluable as Villa continue to operate within UEFA financial restrictions while competing in Europe.
The appointment also reinforces Villa's long-term strategy.
Rather than simply recruiting better players, Emery continues to recruit better coaches. Marginal gains increasingly separate clubs competing for Champions League qualification, and improving the quality of daily coaching can have as much impact as signing another squad player.
Young players could be among the biggest beneficiaries. Villa's academy continues to produce exciting talent, while first-team players outside the regular starting XI will have another experienced coach focused on individual improvement.
Supporters may never hear Chema Sanz speak publicly or see him dominate headlines, but if Aston Villa continue to evolve under Emery, his fingerprints could soon be visible across the squad.
As Emery has repeatedly shown throughout his career, elite teams are built long before Saturday afternoon. The latest addition to Villa's coaching staff suggests that process is continuing with the same meticulous attention to detail that has transformed the club into one of Europe's most respected projects.

When you see a central midfield player, albeit a very good player, being bought for £116m, you can't help but be chuffed that Kamara, Tielemans and McGinn cost £2.75m in total. Bargain. #avfc
I think it's fair to say that Nigel Farage's return to the media round yesterday morning was an unmitigated catastrophe.
When he began his defence to Sally Nugent on the BBC, he repeated his mantra “no one cares” to her three times.
He could not have been further from the truth. With the exception of Ed Balls on ITV, the UK's interviewers finally found their backbones and took him to task over the five million pound bung/gift/donation.
Immediately taking the über-defensive stance, he made so many different claims, that even Julia Hartley-Brewer and Nick Ferrari got in on the anti-Farage action.
I assume there is a Grimm fairy tale that highlights the plight of a little boy that changes his story so many times that he can't remember his own truth.
Probably in that tale, he'll be eaten by a witch living in a giant flying bowl of some sort — and no, this is not an allegorical allusion to Hartley-Brewer, before you @ me!
Farage is that little boy. Talking to Sally Nugent, he told her that the money was an unconditional gift and it was none of her business what he spent it on, before saying he'd not spent it.
Going on, he told us that he needed it for a lifetime of security while on Nick Ferrari's show, he got so muddled up that he said it was definitely not used for a house purchase but ... maybe, and even if it were, he'd not tell anyone.
Oh, and he said he might have put it on the horses or bought some Ferraris.
The root of his story began when he told the world that it was an unconditional gift, but within days the official line had changed to a donation to cover a 'lifetime of security'. Only for it to morph again the following week into a gift for his work achieving Brexit.
Yesterday he trotted out all of these lines and more so you can see where the conspiracy stems from and why it won't be dropped any time soon.
And I'm sorry Nigel, we do care, absolutely everyone cares.
If you missed the relevant interview, here's the 3:45 when Sally Nugent instigated the end of Nigel Farage's career.
Bravo.
Alistair Campbell after the 2016 Brexit referendum,
"Just shocked that we've made such a catastrophically stupid decision. And the world is looking on thinking: didn't you used to be a serious country?"
"I also think there's a lot of buyers remorse"
"On my way here.. A woman said she felt bad for voting leave. I asked: why did you do that then?"
"And she said: I didn't realise that if you voted leave you'd have to leave"
"And you think: oh my god"
"All these people who fell for these lies"
"It's a catastrophe and we're only at the beginning of the consequences playing out"
Farage figured he’d lain low long enough and was worried about the attention Burnham was getting so he risked a morning media round. He got his arse handed to him on the BBC, ITV, LBC and even TalkTV. We’ll not see him again for a while.
Squirming Farage knows this is now a scandal that could end his chances of being PM.
Everyone, including his own supporters, knows his failure to declare a secret £5m bung from a Thailand-based crypto tycoon absolutely STINKS.
If you have a spare 3 mins and 45 secs today, watch this fantastic grilling by Sally Nugent on BBC Breakfast.
The very first time I've seen Farage questioned properly about his £5M bung, and it's fair to say, he totally fluffed it.
There are points when you can see Farage tremble and even accuse the BBC of putting him in danger. 🤦♂️
It was for security. It was for cars. Nobody cares. It's no one's business. He won't tell us. DANGER!
At one point, he let slip that the Parliamentary Commissioner for Standards may 'disagree' with him on the rules around donations.
He knows he's going to be found guilty on this one. He's in trouble, and his face gave it away gloriously.
Top hats off to Sally Nugent. Stellar work. 👏

Reform lost in Caerphilly, Gorton and Denton and now Makerfield. If I didn't know better, I'd think people didn't want a bunch of lying racist incompetent bellends spreading hatred and division.
