The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday placed two senior IPS officers, A Arun and N Kannan, on compulsory wait amid an inquiry into the handling of the POCSO case against Gem Granites chairman R Veeramani, who was arrested along with two associates on August 29.

According to the government order, Arun, Additional Director General of Police and Director of the Tamil Nadu Police Academy at Oonamanchery, and Kannan, Inspector General of Police and Commissioner of Police, Coimbatore City, were brought under compulsory wait with immediate effect. Rajeev Kumar, DGP (Training), was given full additional charge of the Police Academy, while IG R V Ramya Bharathi was given additional charge as Coimbatore City Police Commissioner.

The action followed scrutiny of the manner in which the case was handled after a video purportedly showing the sexual assault of a minor girl was submitted to the Anti-Vice Squad in 2025. The police had subsequently filed a report seeking to drop further action, but a special POCSO court rejected the closure attempt and ordered further investigation.

The case was registered on October 6, 2025, after a Chennai-based volunteer approached the Anti-Vice Squad with a pen drive containing the video. Investigators later identified Veeramani as the man seen in the footage, according to police.

Veeramani, Shanthi and her husband Mahendra Simhan were arrested on August 29. Police subsequently identified multiple survivors and recorded their statements before the court. Investigators have also examined whether the alleged offences extended over a longer period.

Arun was serving in a senior Chennai police position when the video was submitted, while Kannan was serving as a senior city police officer when a complaint was reportedly brought to his attention.

Congress functionary M P Ranjan Kumar has also claimed that he submitted a complaint against Veeramani and Shanthi to the Chennai police in November 2024 and later shared a video with an Anti-Vice Squad inspector.

Meanwhile, the police were conducting a separate inquiry into financial transactions linked to the case. Additional Commissioner of Police Narenthiran Nayar was assigned to examine the financial angle, while another team led by Additional Commissioner of Police P C Thenmozhi was handling the POCSO investigation.

Police have also searched premises linked to Veeramani and examined digital records, documents and financial transactions as part of the continuing investigation.

There is a line even journalism must never cross.

Publishing or circulating visuals of alleged sexual abuse of a child is not “exposing the truth” the truth can be reported without making a victim’s trauma publicly consumable.

The evidence belongs with investigators and the courts. The child’s dignity belongs to the child.

Expose the crime. Question the system. Demand justice. But never turn a survivor’s suffering into content.

Some evidence needs to be examined!!!not exhibited 💯💯💯

And whoever leaked or facilitated the circulation of such sensitive material must be identified, investigated and punished in accordance with the law. Accountability cannot stop with the perpetrators….it must extend to those who violated the child’s privacy by leaking it.
