MOO is an oceanographic observatory in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica: Live video, audio and ocean conditions under the ice! Managed by Paul Cziko @uoregon @NSF_OPP
Check out the video spectrograms of the newly-discovered *ultrasonic* calls of Weddell seals, recorded under the sea ice in #Antarctica. Biology is full of surprises!

The calls are played at native frequencies, then shifted down so you can hear them.
Weddell seals in #Antarctica regularly produce *ultrasonic* vocalizations! High-pitched sounds that humans can't hear.
For communication? Echolocation in absolute dark of #Antarctic winter??
Today's @uoregon news about our discovery:

Here's a video of a Weddell seal making an *ultrasonic* chirp call under the sea ice of #Antarctica.
Head/chest move, but no air escapes the mouth-air is just moved around internally.
Presented in real time, then slowed down so you can hear the chirps. https://t.co/wjgoH8XIWO
Nine recurrent ultrasonic call types discovered in @MOOAntarctica's acoustic dataset - from under the sea ice in McMurdo Sound, #Antarctica. We don't know the functions of the ultrasonic calls. Echolocation? Communication? Full video: https://t.co/WoVDjgZsPQ vid: Henry Kaiser
Weddell seals produce *ultrasonic* vocalizations! We published today in @ASA_JASA. First seals known to regularly use high-pitched sounds that humans can’t hear. https://t.co/VyYMZH79aQ See fun summary VIDEO 👇🏾👇

@BillyOcean718 There is. The Air Force (McChord AFB, C17s) and Air National Guard (NY 109th, LC130s) support the intercontinental airlift, and LC130s to S. Pole. The Navy (MSC, NCHB) runs shipping and offload. Coast Guard breaks ice to get ships to McMurdo Station. Info: https://t.co/zTcmB9UL8F

Timelapse: Over the winter, some hardy souls started building a new IT building @ @NSF_OPP's McMurdo Station in #Antarctica. 2nd phase starting now. Improved network and internet could facilitate needed ocean observing, like an improved @MOOAntarctica. https://t.co/6SjEzh4Txu
