What is captured in this video is not mischief. It is tragedy. It is the painful sight of young people deliberately destroying public infrastructure that was meant to serve them, their families, and generations to come.

To watch youths use stones and hammers to break apart a newly constructed road drainage, all for the purpose of extracting iron rods, is to watch hope being dismantled in real time. This is not survival. This is self-sabotage.

We must call it what it is: vandalism. And it is a shame that such acts have become all too common, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria where government has invested scarce resources to build roads, drainages, and other basic amenities. The question then becomes, why destroy what was built for your own good?

The answer cannot be poverty alone. Poverty explains desperation, but it does not excuse destruction. When we pull out iron rods from a drainage, we are not just stealing metal. We are inviting floods. We are inviting accidents. We are inviting the collapse of the very road our mothers use to go to market and our children use to go to school. We are turning public good into private scrap, and in the process, condemning our own communities to further decay.

This is the dangerous cycle we have found ourselves in. Government builds. Citizens destroy. Government borrows again to rebuild. And the cycle repeats while nothing truly develops. No nation grows this way. No society progresses by eating its own future.

What this video exposes is a deeper crisis: a crisis of orientation, of civic responsibility, and of hope. When young people see no value in public property, it is because somewhere along the line they were made to feel that government does not belong to them. That projects are not for them. That the future is not for them. That despair is a more powerful motivator than patriotism.

But we must reject that narrative. Roads, drainages, schools, and hospitals are not gifts from politicians. They are rights. They are investments paid for with taxpayers’ money. When we destroy them, we are stealing from ourselves.

To the youths involved: you are not “smart” for removing those rods. You are mortgaging your tomorrow for a few naira today. To community leaders, parents, and authorities: we must do better in mentoring, in enforcement, and in creating opportunities so that energy is channeled into building, not breaking.

A society that destroys what it builds will never rise. Let us condemn this act in the strongest terms, and let us begin the harder work of rebuilding not just infrastructure, but mindset.

Baba Opebe revealed that he has been battling illness for over a year. According to him, doctors said he has a shortage of blood. He has received 4 pints of blood and done several tests, but there has been no improvement.
