Learn more about our project on filter feeding sharks and microplastics! Thanks once more to @saveourseas and to Isla- it was such a pleasure talking science with you!
Could the ocean's largest sharks be threatened by plastic so small it can’t be seen with the naked eye?
Find out on ep.22 of #Thewholetoothpodcast with our host @isla_dawn & @alinamwieczorek@mplargestfish

Yesterday was a great day for team @MPLargestFish as we spotted over 60 #baskingsharks around Achill Island.
Well done @Wildisland_film on this amazing footage which we will use for our outreach programme and documentary.
@saveourseas
An inquisitive #baskingshark came right up to our kayak as @AlinaMWieczorek was collecting plankton and microplastic samples in Keem bay to investigate diet and exposure to microplastics by these large filter feeders.

Happy #internationalwhalesharkday !
Learn more about how these beautiful and endangered creatures who gently roam our oceans and feed on plankton are exposed to #microplastics.
Today I will be presenting the work we did in the @MPWhalesharks project over the past year to develop solutions with stakeholders to combat #plasticpollution and help protect the #largestfish and the unique habitats they live in

Project leader Jonathan Green, who is tracking whale shark movement patterns in and around the Galápagos Marine Reserve, talks to @guardian about his research into the reproductive behaviour of whale sharks, of which very little is known.

Endangered, filter-feeding whale sharks are at risk from plastics invisible to most of us in the seas. @AlinaMWieczorek & @giulidonati11 are investigating how these sharks scoop up microplastics as they feed & finding out where the plastics might come from

#microplastic and #whaleshark research in times of COVID19 and what the pandemic tought us about the importance of #scicomm. Read our newest @saveourseas blogpost: https://t.co/HNUwZ6VJpf which includes a mini-documentary on the outreach work we do. 🎥 @Wildisland_film
Thats fascinating - whale and basking sharks seemed to have followed suit from these guys. Only that back then they didnt encounter any #microplastics I bet you...
Scientists from the University of Bristol and the University of Zurich have shown that #Titanichthys, a giant armored fish that lived in the seas during the Late Devonian period 380 MYA fed in a similar manner to modern-day Basking Sharks. #FishSci

In time for the kick off for our second year focussing on #microplastics and #baskingsharks we see them return to the Irish coast browsing for planctonic prey.Unfortunately due to C19 we had to postpone field work to next year but we are so glad to see them return in high numbers
Are microplastics on the menu for filter-feeding whale sharks?
@AlinaMWieczorek & @giulidonati11 of @MPWhalesharks are hard at work in the Maldives to find out.
