I'm a product of one and currently work at one. We just can never seem to get out of our own way. So much potential, but the right leadership is essential. One bad hire/fire can set you back immensely...even more so than higher resourced institutions!

When you do get qualified staff that have experiences outside of HBCUs, you have to let those people cook! There’s more than one way to do things, and just because you’ve always done it that way doesn’t mean that’s the best move going forward.
