Blue jets above Earth: a rare atmospheric phenomenon captured from the ISS.

One of the rarest atmospheric light phenomena—a so-called "blue jet"—was captured from the space station orbiting approximately 400 km above Earth's surface. The event was observed above a storm front during the summer, when a bright flash shot vertically upward from high above the clouds.

The footage shows a blue beam instantly erupting from the top of the storm, accompanied by red flashes spreading across the sky like glowing tentacles. The phenomenon lasts less than a second.

Such events are classified as Transient Luminous Events—rare, short-lived pulses occurring at altitudes of 40 to 80 km above storm clouds. Observing them from the ground is extremely difficult due to viewing angles and limited visibility.
