France passed a law requiring solar panels on every parking lot with more than 80 spaces.
Parking lots over a certain size have three to five years to cover at least half their surface area with solar canopies or face fines.
The projected output: up to 11 gigawatts of capacity, the equivalent of 10 nuclear reactors.
The panels shade the cars. They can charge EVs directly underneath them. They generate electricity for the grid. The parking lot goes from dead infrastructure to power plant without using a single additional acre of land.
France plans to increase solar tenfold and double wind capacity by 2033.
The US has approximately 800 million parking spaces. Eight hundred million. Most of them are uncovered asphalt sitting in direct sunlight.
Why aren't we doing this?
That was some of the most remarkable live television I've seen. Shoutouts to the iconic narrating man, to the woman chiming in with the confirmation checks, to the astronauts, to the cheering room, to humanity
@b_cuse_ We cycled around Brooklyn this past weekend and it’s horrible there. We are experienced cyclists and I felt unsafe often. Also paint doesn’t stop someone from double parking across the bike lane. Any barrier is better than none. Minimum should be like the Harney bike way was.
@PeteFestersen Glad to see you listened to feedback and added the bike lane. It will make things safer for everyone. I can’t wait to see how it’s implemented.
@b_cuse_ Mayor Stothert keeps bringing up Vision Zero lately, let’s remind her that protected bike lanes are one of the best ways to provide a safe corridor for cyclists and scooters.
@RonFilipkowski We have a 25 foot statue of this in Memorial Park in Omaha for over a year. It has been somewhat controversial and I believe it’s supposed to come down soon.
@Block16Omaha We had this as well as the amazing grilled cheese for lunch. I can’t even describe how good the sandwich was. Incredible mix of flavors and texture. It was an amazing value as well. FYI after eating it, you’ll need a nap.
@PeteFestersen@OWHnews This is needed, though enforcement only goes so far and tends to be biased against racial minorities. What Omaha truly needs is an evaluation and change of road designs to help calm traffic and increase safety for both drivers and pedestrians.
