A nearly 4,000-year-old mathematics textbook.
This manual on arithmetic and geometry dates back to the 12th Dynasty of the Middle Kingdom (1985–1795 BCE). It was copied in the 33rd year of the reign of King Apophis (c. 1650 BCE) by a scribe named Ahmes. The artifact is known as the Ahmes Papyrus after him. It contains a formula for finding the volume of a cube, examples of calculating the area of a triangle and a circle, and methods for calculating the inclination of a pyramid.
The artifact is housed in the British Museum.
