Amnesty On the Plateau
Amnesty International was in Jos Plateau state on 7 October 2026 for a press conference and engagement with civil society organizations and activists, as part of our efforts to work collaboratively to address specific human rights issues, including endless killings, mob violence and gender-based violence.
Grassroots activists and lawyers in Plateau state like Stella Samuel and Jacob Choji Pwakim - and many others have been dedicating themselves to ensuring accountability for human rights violations and other atrocities. Silence is never the answer.
So much bloodshed has been going on in Plateau state — and for so long. The failure of Nigerian authorities to end this impunity is further endangering lives, accelarating food insecurity and emboldening impunity.

If the Tinubu government knew how much traction and popularity its actions in Kano have given the Tinubu Must Go (#TMG) movement, perhaps it would have quietly allowed us to gather peacefully and exercise our constitutional rights.
By barricading our venue with heavily armed policemen and preventing a peaceful gathering, they have amplified the very message they apparently wanted to suppress.
We are even more emboldened. Nigerians can see what is happening for themselves. You cannot preach democracy while being frightened by citizens peacefully expressing a political opinion.
TMG remains peaceful, lawful and determined. Tinubu Must Go!

IMO: Coroner’s Findings on Japheth Njoku’s Death At Tiger Base Must Lead to Justice
11 October 2026
Amnesty International welcomes the findings delivered on 30 September 2026 by Chief Magistrate E. U. Chinaka of the Chief Magistrate’s Court, Owerri, sitting as a Coroner, into the death of 32-year-old Japheth Njoku in police custody at Tiger Base, Owerri, Imo State.
Amnesty International calls on the Attorney-General of Imo State, the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission and the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, to promptly implement the Coroner’s recommendations, ensure prosecution where there is sufficient evidence of criminal responsibility, and provide adequate compensation and reparation to Njoku’s family. Reported attempts to obstruct the court-ordered autopsy and intimidate witnesses must also be independently investigated.
The Coroner found that Njoku was detained for about six weeks over an allegation of stealing, a bailable offence, and that demands for money and the inhuman conditions in which he was held contributed to the deterioration of his health and eventual death.
The findings reinforce concerns documented by Amnesty International about human rights violations at Tiger Base, including arbitrary detention, torture and other ill-treatment, extortion and deaths in custody. The organization calls on the authorities to urgently address these concerns, strengthen safeguards for people in police custody and ensure effective remedies for victims.
Japheth Njoku entered police custody alive. His death demands truth, justice and accountability. His family has a right to an effective remedy, and anyone suspected to be responsible must be held to account.
Tinubu has failed on security, wallahi. This is a very shameful thing for those who are supporting this incompetent government that has failed to protect people's lives and property.
Amnesty International strongly condemns the unlawful and outrageous blocking of the venue of a “Tinubu-Must-Go” event today in Kano. Heavily armed police blocked both ends of the road leading to the venue of the event.
The Nigeria Police @PoliceNG must desist from such reckless violation of human rights. It is perfectly within the rights of supporters of all candidates and all political parties to carry out peaceful political activities.
The duty of the police is to facilitate peaceful conduct of such political gatherings — no matter the political party or candidate being supported or opposed. Freedom of association and peaceful assembly is not exclusive to one political party and its supporters.
The Kano incident is part of a troubling pattern of repression by police targeting opposition members in various parts of the country. Such repeated attacks and intimidation against opposition supporters could make it more difficult for them to associate freely and hold peaceful public gatherings.

Press Release
Nigeria: Cancellation of Book Presentation is an Attack on Freedom
Amnesty International strongly condemns the authorities of Ahmadu Bello University Zaria for flagrantly succumbing to political pressure by cancelling the planned public presentation of the book, “Tinubu: From Renewed Hope to Despair: A Critical Examination of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Government.” The abrupt cancellation of the book presentation slated for Thursday 15 October 2026 at Arewa House Kaduna again shows escalating political repression nationwide.
It is deeply disturbing that upon attempts by the organizers Centre for Democratic Development Research and Training (CEDDERT) Zaria to find an another venue for the book presentation in Kaduna all hotels and event centres approached declined, pointing out that “they have been warned not to accommodate our event.”
The Nigerian authorities must end these undemocratic patterns of attack on freedom of expression. Everything the book was already in public domain. The book which interrogates government policies and assesses their implications for people is a legitimate means of peaceful intellectual engagement. It poses no threat to peace.
Desperate attempts to prevent the presentation of shows increasing pattern of intolerance of dissenting opinions. This pattern of repression is creating a climate of fear and making expressing dissenting opinions almost impossible. This is unacceptable in a free society.
The authorities of Ahmadu Bello University must always be on the side of freedom and must immediately and unconditionally withdraw the cancellation of the booking of Arewa House Kaduna for the book presentation. The rights to freedom of expression and association must be upheld.
Borno: Amnesty International Condemns the Killings of 15 Local Farmers in Marte
Amnesty International strongly condemns the horrific of at least 15 people killing on Thursday, 1 October 2026, in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, Northeast Nigeria.
The victims, who were local residents venturing into the surrounding bush to gather firewood to earn a living or cook for their families, were ambushed and targeted by suspected Boko Haram group. Local framers in the area continues to face this extreme risks on a daily basis.
The targeting of civilians by non-state actors constitutes a grave violation of international humanitarian law. Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to take immediate, transparent, and human-rights-compliant measures to protect vulnerable communities living in the region.
Authorities must conduct a prompt, thorough, and independent investigation into the Marte killings to ensure those suspected to be responsible are brought to justice.
@elrufai What is the justification of deterning el-rufa'i up to now. But best of my own thinking they are not going to release him till after elections.
