Welcome to Make Votes Matter Totnes & South Devon - a community of activists and volunteers committed to introducing Proportional Representation in the UK.
Our motley crew of Make Votes Matter Milton Keynesians decamped near the library to hand out some reading matter to MK's scholars. Great chats as always! Join us for our monthly Zoom on Thurs to hear more! @MakeVotesMatter
When parties can use their 40% majority governments to hide their decisions behind closed doors, corruption thrives.
So it's no surprise the top countries for accountability and transparency all use proportional representation.
Will you make that happen, @BonnieCrombie?
It's no surprise countries with proportional systems have higher voter turnout.
When people feel like their vote matters, they're more likely to show up at the polls.
We're re-launching our Speaker Programme in the campaign for electoral reform across the UK! 🎉

We don't live under a two party system... but our voting system does!
In 2024 the smaller parties received 42.6% of the vote, a big increase on the 24.3% achieved by parties other than Labour/Conservatives in 2019.
When new governments undo their predecessors' work, instability and mistrust are ensured.
Proportional representation ensures steady, sustainable policies through collaboration.
Let's end the flip-flopping!
Two indisputable facts:
1️⃣ With first-past-the-post (FPTP), a party can win the most seats without winning the most votes—impossible with proportional representation.
2️⃣ With FPTP, a party can come second in votes but still win —also impossible with PR.
It's time for change.
In the Olympics, every athlete's effort counts towards the team's success. Politics should be the same!
With proportional representation, every vote strengthens our democracy, making it a true team sport where everyone's voice matters.
It is time Canada.

“Two-party adversarial politics have let the country down.
[..] Good government should prioritise consensus, collaboration and compromise, across as wide a section of the population as possible.”

"I've heard a lot from constituents who have looked at the results of the general election and raised questions of Proportional Representation"

Another sunny Sunday afternoon on Morecambe prom 😎
Some very interesting conversations with people wanting PR for a whole range of different reasons. Many were happy to write a postcard to Keir Starmer telling him why 😀

Another week chock full of reasons to join your local Make Votes Matter group! Even if you don't quite have the energy to do anything locally (but you should, we're great!) please follow @MakeVotesMatter or visit their site for national actions. Let's get some democracy back!
The Kings Speech Amendment K, put forward by the Lib Dems also called for #ProportionalRepresentation
👏👏
But of course the huge Labour majority, on just 34% of votes cast, under the #FPTP voting system, meant that the amendment was defeated.

2024-07-23: King's Speech (Motion for an Address): Amendment (k)
The 84 MPs voting 'Aye' represented 9,908,248 voters.
The 380 MPs voting 'No' represented 9,216,704 voters.
Aye majority = 691,544
But result was No because seats don't match votes.

We have a chance to make sure every newly elected MP knows that their constituents demand action on climate and nature.
I’ve emailed my MP asking them to prioritise these issues in their first speech to parliament. Join me? https://t.co/d1a2R85lGm
