After the historic deluge over the Bor Ghat section, the focus of intense monsoon activity shifted northwards towards the #Bhimashankar–#Ahupe Ghat region, where another spell of exceptionally heavy rainfall lashed the upper #UlhasRiver catchment. 🌧️⛰️
Ahupe recorded the highest 24-hour rainfall of the day with 460 mm, while widespread extremely heavy rainfall was also reported across the Bhimashankar–Matheran–Lonavala belt.
The fresh spell once again generated a rapid hydrological response across the Ulhas Valley. Just a day after river levels had begun to recede, the renewed heavy rainfall over the upper catchment caused the Ulhas River at Badlapur to rise sharply once again, touching the danger level of 17.50 metres at 12:00 PM on 8 July 2026.
The river responded quickly because exceptionally heavy rainfall occurred across almost the entire Ulhas basin—from the eastern headwater catchments of Ahupe and Bhimashankar, through the Bor Ghat region of Lonavala and Khandala, and further west over the Matheran hills. Simultaneously, the downstream river corridor, including Karjat, Neral, and Badlapur, also received heavy rainfall, substantially increasing runoff into the river system.

#Mumbai recorded its 4th #warmest May night on record 🌃
Meanwhile, #Badlapur also recorded its warmest night in at least the last 13 years since my observatory was established.
The exceptionally warm night conditions were not limited to Mumbai alone. Much of the #MMR region also witnessed one of its warmest nights in at least the past decade under increased humidity and persistent cloud cover associated with the pre-#monsoon seasonal transition.
However, detailed long-term comparisons for many interior MMR locations remain difficult due to the lack of older AWS and observational datasets across the region.

my son inadvertently dropped his piggy bank, I saw more than just scattered coins I saw an opportunity to secure his future. I opened an NPS Vatsalya account as his birthday gift. Because a child’s dreams deserve more than just a piggy bank; they deserve a Surakshit Bhavishya.

First come out of your #SoBo world, then you will understand the reality.
Comparing #Kalyan with #NaviMumbai?
Navi Mumbai got its first railway line only in 1992, when the Harbour line was extended after the Vashi Bridge was built.
But Kalyan got its first railway line way back in 1854 during the #British era itself. See how visionary the British were — just one year after the #Thane line started, the Thane–Kalyan service was already operational.
Kalyan also has deep historical importance. It served as a capital during the era of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. And if you go even further back, #Mumbai didn’t even exist on the map then — during the Satavahana period, Kalyan was already a major port city. So don’t underestimate Kalyan’s historical significance; it is a much older and culturally richer city, long before SoBo even existed.
But after independence, both the Indian government and the state government have treated the entire Thane district like a stepchild. For them, only the western suburbs of Mumbai and SoBo seem to matter. The central side is treated as if only ‘cattle’ live there — that’s the sad reality of their policy...
Right now, politics works in such a way that only the areas where rich business houses live get priority (Gujju, Parsi, Jain, Marwadi). Development seems to matter only on that side — that’s why all the metro corridors, sea links, and premium infrastructure projects are focused on South Mumbai and the western suburbs.
Meanwhile, the Marathi-majority areas are still stuck with the same old, over-saturated British-era infrastructure. No proper roads, no balanced metro connectivity, and no serious long-term planning. It feels as if these regions are being purposely neglected despite carrying the maximum load of the city.
Mumbai was originally part of Thane district until 1920. Later, South Mumbai was separated, and then further Suburban Mumbai district was formed. Recently in 2014, Palghar was again carved out of Thane district. Now there are plans to create a separate Kalyan district as well.
So, instead of developing the district as a whole, the government has continuously been splitting Thane district since 1920, while ignoring the development of the remaining regions.
The very SoBo whose development people proudly flaunt today was actually shaped by a visionary #Marathi leader — Jagannath Shankarsheth Murkute from Murbad. At that time, the entire stretch from Murbad to Colaba fell under one unified Thane district. Because of that administrative setup, the country’s first railway line — from CSMT to Kalyan — became possible.
But today, after repeatedly splitting the same Thane district, the Marathi population and the region that once enabled Mumbai’s foundation are being ignored by political parties.
