It’s the usual smoke & mirrors from the Environment Agency on this.

The EA manipulates the data to make the current disastrous state of our rivers look better than it is by carefully choosing sampling points. I was surprised (given my knowledge of the river) to find out from the EA that the River Roding was ok & improving on most metrics. Then I found out that they have only *one* sampling point on the whole lower river & it’s conveniently located just above where the largest amount of sewage enters the river & where the river is most physically modified. How can we actually restore our rivers, rather than just pretending they are fine, without having a genuine picture of the health of the river?

Even worse, tributaries like the Aldersbrook aren’t even monitored at all, despite them being important enough to warrant a permit regime with threat of jail if you touch the river without consent. I wonder if there should be a new ‘Water Framework Directive’ classification of ‘Ecologically Dead; no plans to resurrect it’ for rivers like the Aldersbrook?

Big companies have an army of lobbyists to represent their interests to politicians, so why can’t every river have lobbyists too?

I’m at City Hall today to speak on behalf of the River Roding & put forward the river’s rights & interests to the Deputy Mayor of London for the Environment.

I’m also here to explain why grassroots local river guardians are vital to delivering the Mayor’s promises on clean & healthy rivers. With our detailed local knowledge & boundless energy to care for the rivers we love, river guardians can achieve more than government agencies or big river charities if they are given just a small amount of political & regulatory support & funding.

I’m carrying out the horrible task of ringing Dad’s utility and service providers to inform them of his death. Bereavement teams at his banks- all so lovely. Same with @SkyUK and @VodafoneUK, so compassionate and backdated termination of service to the date of his death.
@virginmedia, however, totally different story. Will NOT BACKDATE termination of contract, only to today. It was only 2.5 weeks ago, but it’s the principle.
Why is this jarring policy in place, @virginmedia, and differs so much from your competitors?

Whatever the Environment Agency says, we *will* restore our river…

Volunteers were back out on the River Roding this weekend, ignoring the threats & lies of @EnvAgency, to battle against the odds to restore a part of the river that the authorities have left to die. The stretch of the Roding around Ilford has some of the worst problems on the river: rubbish and invasive species on its banks; sewage in its water; and huge amounts of rubbish & debris in the channel. I applied for funding from the Mayor to sort out this part of the river (which would have paid for floating barges and skips), but having been rejected twice, I decided we should just get on with it.

This is not an easy part of the river to clean, as the water is deep in places & the high concrete banks means it’s impossible to get large objects out of the river in most places. Luckily, our previous clearance of the area north of ilford bridge in May gave us an exit point, and I brought up a large rowboat and canoe. Teams in waders could load these boats with rubbish & then float them to be unloaded & the waste taken up onto the road. As some of the debris was deeply buried in the mud, we set up a winch on one of the trees to haul it out. We got an unbelievable array of crap from the river: a TV, mattress, shopping trolleys, pipes, traffic cones, random bits of metal and even a bench, which is now cleaned off and offers a place to sit beside the river.

This section of river- right in the centre of Ilford- could be genuinely lovely. Whilst it’s in a desperate state, we saw large mullet, dragonflies and reedbeds slowly returning along the edge where we had removed invasive species. There’s still much to do though.
