“East Africa needs to prepare for decommissioning adequately so as to avoid the undesirable situation of the region having orphan wells where persons responsible for decommissioning vanished. For example, Canada currently has over 6,000 orphan wells and the country is struggling to have these wells decommissioned through an orphan fund levy.

“This is negatively impacting funds which would have otherwise been used for the development of the country,” Mr Moses Ekunu @MYMOX, Manager Office of the Executive Director at PAU stressed during a presentation on the need to align decommissioning legislation to the realities of the energy transition.
