Oscar Zeta Acosta was a Mexican American attorney, activist, author, and one of the most influential figures in the Chicano Movement of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Based in Los Angeles, he became known for defending victims of police brutality and fighting discrimination within the criminal justice system. His outspoken advocacy for Mexican Americans made him a controversial figure, admired by supporters and closely watched by law enforcement.

Acosta became internationally known as the inspiration for Dr. Gonzo, the larger-than-life attorney portrayed in Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Although Thompson fictionalized many aspects of the character, Dr. Gonzo was largely based on Acosta's personality, legal career, and friendship with the author.

In May 1974, Acosta disappeared after telling his son during a telephone call that he was about to board a boat in Mazatlán, Mexico. He was never seen again. Numerous theories have been proposed, including accidental drowning, foul play, or a voluntary disappearance, but no conclusive evidence has ever emerged.

Before his disappearance, Acosta published two acclaimed autobiographical novels, The Autobiography of a Brown Buffalo (1972) and The Revolt of the Cockroach People (1973). Both are now considered landmark works of Chicano literature and remain widely studied for their blend of personal narrative, political activism, and social commentary.

The world has witnessed two years of Israeli genocide: countless massacres, widespread displacement, engineered famine, and the annihilation of civic infrastructure. Israel has successively occupied North Gaza, Rafah, and Khan Younis, sealing them off, and razing them to the ground. Yet it has failed in its strategic aim — the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians from all of Gaza.

Any ceasefire must protect what remains of Gaza City, and dismantle the military corridors, so that Palestinians can return to their land. Without support for Palestinian-led reconstruction, the genocide will continue.

Israelis are (I swear) describing their unprovoked, unilateral attack on Iran as proof that Israel stands at the vanguard of western civilization, fighting the good fight against the forces of fanatacism. Iran is "radical", just like Hamas, whereas Israel is moderation incarnate and must therefore take on those pesky radicals for the benefit of the world.

What's interesting is that this works both ways - as a self-generated illusion and as a factual truth. The illusion casts the global north as "moral" by default. Everyone else can, at best, hope to be thought of as "suspect". And so Israel casts itself as the bearer and guardian of this axiomatic morality.

The truth is that the fiction of morality is one of the most primary tactics in the western arsenal. The claim for supremacy is not exclusively Israeli. Israel is, however, taking it to an unprecedented level of vileness by not even pretending to deny its existential contempt for those it perceives as beneath Israeli standards. The Palestinians are the immediate victims, punished most severely. But as Israel's rampage through Iran reveals, no one is immune. When Pep Guardiola confessed his fear for his children he was mocked by Israelis. I think fewer people are laughing now.
