PAKISTAN: The recent arrests of Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan, nephews of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, in cases relating to the 9 May (2023) protests, are part of political witch-hunt aimed at intimidating the family members of political opponents. Amnesty International calls on Pakistani authorities to immediately release Shershah Khan and Shahrez Khan.

Their arrest is part of a larger pattern of politically motivated targeting and detention against the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to crush political opposition and muzzle dissent in the country. Targeting family members of opposition leaders and activists by the government is becoming an increasingly common practice in Pakistan and must stop.

In the last few days, my sons’ cousins, Shahrez & Shershah (Aleema Khan’s sons), have been abducted from their homes in front of their young children & held in prison.
Their other cousin Hassan Niazi, has been held in a military prison for over a year.
The government has also threatened my sons Sulaiman and @Kasim_Khan_1999 with arrest if they travel to Pakistan to visit their father.

Shahrez Khan was my senior in college, he’s an athlete, handles the family business & has nothing to do with politics. I’m worried about his abduction. Punjab Police chief is denying an arrest but should immediately work towards finding Shahrez. He was leaving today for Estonia with his wife to participate in a race/marathon and was told he couldn’t leave. His 6 and 1.5 year old witnessed their dad being dragged out. Shahrez in casual attire (shorts) was relaxing after having dinner with his father while his wife was speaking on her phone when 4 men barged in & grabbed her phone as well as taking the camera monitors set up in the kitchen. This is really disturbing.
