In the 25 years since we were first introduced to #TheSopranos, one thing is clear: there will never be another television show that impacts and influences culture as much as The Sopranos. In fact, The Sopranos is more than a show- it’s a work of art. A work of art that came out at the right time (pre-social media/early 2000s), at the right place (HBO), with the right people (David Chase, James Gandolfini, and the entire brilliant cast). When David Chase created the show, many figured The Sopranos would be another run-of-the-mill mafia crime show. Instead, Chase took risks like television had never seen- he explored the psychology of Tony through therapy & dream sequences, he asked questions about family & American culture, and he somehow weaved humor into an otherwise extremely serious story. The bottom line is Chase pushed every boundary possible. Part of what allowed Chase to take so many risks was James Gandolfini- God rest his soul. Gandolfini became Tony Soprano; he embodied the role and all its massive responsibility in a way no other actor could. The partnership between Gandolfini & Chase lead a world-class group of actors & writers that wound up creating the greatest show in television history. As one of the first shows to embrace the anti-hero, The Sopranos paved the way for Breaking Bad, Mad Men, House of Cards, and television as we know it. So on the show’s 25th anniversary, raise a glass in salute to television’s number one family.
