One of the things I loved about early Twitter was meeting people I had absolutely no reason to know.
A stranger replied to a tweet. We talked. Months later we met at a conference or over coffee.
Sometimes those weak online connections became clients, collaborators or friends I still know today.
Years later researchers tested the power of weak ties at enormous scale.
A 2022 Science study involving more than 20 million people found that weaker social connections can play an important role in job mobility.
That helped explain something I had felt on Twitter long before I knew the research.
The internet’s original magic wasn’t merely broadcasting to millions.
It was allowing a stranger on the other side of the world to enter your life.
Weak ties sometimes become strong relationships.
