This is how our temples nurtured Tamil, preserved it, and transmitted it across generations. This is how Tamil was patronised by our kings, this is why Tamil continues to live vibrantly among the people — because it was embedded in devotion.

Listen to this brilliant Thevaram hymn of Appar Swami (Tirunavukkarasar), where he declares that the sacred mantra “Nama Shivaya” becomes the unfailing support in times of hardship:
