WE’RE IN THE NEWS!
Preparations are already in top gear for GLOWFUX Charity Concert 2025, and The Nation Newspaper captured the heartbeat of what’s coming.
As the drums of compassion roll louder, we invite you to mark your calendar for a day where charity meets celebration,
WHO IS MHR BABAJIMI BENSON?
First of all, I laugh when people say all lawmakers do in Abuja is drive exotic cars, live in luxury mansions, then stroll into the chamber to sleep through half the session and spend the remaining half chorusing “Yay!”
My laughter here is not born of amusement.
No. It is the kind that comes when tears are insufficient - agonizing amusement. When pain is too deep for crying, laughter becomes the last refuge. This ignorance is not light; it is dense, almost tangible.
My brother, as the great Mandela once told America: “Your enemies do not have to be our enemies.” In the same vein - their lawmakers are not our lawmakers. Because many societies in this clime have been cursed with leaders without vision, particularly lawmakers without insight, does not mean your sickness must become our inheritance. My people will say, one man’s swollen foot does not make the whole village lame.
And that brings me squarely to the subject: BABAJIMI BENSON.
When I resumed as a political aide, MHR Babajimi Benson was the very first man I visited. Why? Because I lived in Ikorodu. I invested heavily in Ikorodu. And I know, as one knows the lines on his palm, that it was leaders like Jimi Benson who dragged Ikorodu from the margins of neglect into the path of becoming the city it is rapidly turning into. I went to say THANK YOU
My first encounter with Ikorodu was in 2004, and I can testify that if destiny had decreed we should perish by snake venom or the claws of wild beasts, many of you today would not know the Legendary-Joe. Back then, animal sounds and bird melodies outnumbered human voices.
At some point, I could tell from a distance which bird had just sung and which insect had flown past. If the likes of Jimi Benson had not risen among us as a leader with foresight, I fear even Arojinle would not match my mastery of animal knowledge - because while he studied assiduously and researched rigorously, I shared habitat with them. Give it another decade from 2004, and they might have known me by name, perhaps even adopted me as one of their own. After all, it was we humans who trespassed into what should have remained their ancestral estate.
But Jimi rose. And forests began to bow before tarred roads. Bushes retreated for infrastructure. What once was wilderness yielded to planning. Many developments I initially credited to the State government were later revealed - upon closer inspection - to be the handiwork of one man.
I personally know of:
1 state-of-the-art stadium at LASUTECH.
1 diagnostic centre, built and fully equipped.
4 primary healthcare centres, built and equipped.
1 trauma centre, built and equipped.
29 school buildings constructed.
72 roads constructed - stretching from Odogunyan to Eyita, Igbogbo to Bayeku, Lucky Fibre to Imota, and the list continues like a river that refuses to dry.
2 ICT hubs, fully equipped with hundreds of laptops.- last count I heard was about 500.
1 eighty-bed hospital, built and equipped. This one deserves a pause, especially when you remember there was a governor who could not build even one in eight years.
We say their leaders are not our leaders, and that belief shapes our insistence on accountability. We tell them: hold your leaders to your standards and leave us to ours - because the scales are not the same.
While theirs may clap for gutters and celebrate JB slabs, ours might still hesitate to return a man who has done all this. Such is irony.
When we emphasize the power of mentorship, they scoff and say it is unnecessary. But we have seen with our own eyes that you cannot follow Asiwaju diligently, the way Jimi has done, and still end up a mediocre.
Have you also examined Baba Femi Gbajabiamila’s strides in Surulere as well?
As Pastor Paul Enenche would say - Lions do not give birth to goats.
Good morning, my brother.
I went to Ikorodu today and I’m honestly pissed.
24/7 light, clean water everywhere. Houses cheaper, spacious and better than Lekki.
Meanwhile, I’m struggling for common clean water on the Island.
I’m not jealous, I’m frustrated.
THE REAL HEROES DON’T WEAR APPLAUSE.
THEY WEAR SWEAT. DUST. SACRIFICE.
While some watched the show, these ones cleaned toilets, lifted weight, climbed ladders, packed gifts, moved canopies, and stayed long after the cheers faded. Not for fame. Not for cameras. But because
