Today marks the official nationwide kickoff of the presidential campaign for all political parties.

The point this man raised here goes to the core of the redemptive work.

God is not just a God of mercy but also of justice. God could not bestow mercy upon humanity and at the same time contradict another quality of his being which is justice. For him to have been able to forgive the debt of humanity someone had to step in and actually pay the debt.

The genius of God's mercy in his redemptive work was that his sense of justice could not be violated in extending mercy to humanity. The wages of sin was and is death and someone had to pay the price. It was also justified that if it was by one man condemnation came upon all then it should also take just one man to pay the price.

To think of God as a "merciful" God who has ignored his sense of justice because Jesus has now paid the price would be to miss the point of redemption.

The debt was paid for in full by God through Jesus so that he could remain just in justifying humanity. This scale of justice and mercy still plays out today in our Christian faith. To focus on just one aspect and "bury" the other side will be to raise people who would be void of the fear of God.

The blood of Jesus did not change the character of God.
