@ShaunieDarko We’re having a debate in #TSUQueerYA about the presence of aliens in We Are the Ants. The abductions seem to parallel mental breaks/ blackouts from failure to cope with grief/stress. Was this written as a parallel on purpose or are we just really reading into it?

After discussing Charlie’s reaction to Henry coming home after being gone for three days, I think anger is a pretty natural reaction. I think it’s much easier for Charlie to be angry than to be open about the worry and fear he felt. Very hyper masculine of him. #TSUQueerYA

@lesley_reno I also like that the book hasn’t straight up said that Henry is depressed. Readers are supposed to feel his emotions (or lack thereof) and deduce that Henry is depressed. It really emphasizes how someone suffering from depression may not recognize it as despression #TSUQueerYA

@lesley_reno My group actually discussed this theory on Tuesday. The alien abductions are essentially his brain’s coping mechanism for the tremendous stress he’s under and depression he’s suffering from. He’s never coped with Jesse’s death or his father leaving so his brain is #TSUQueerYA

@vroom_isaac They’re just so romanticized. And they focus on the relationship itself so it’s hard to seperate individual characters from the relationships. So part of me understands the trap Darcy fell into. But also I just want her to get out on her own and find her own identity #TSUQueerYA
