In lecture we discussed how Vals + Prizm frameworks put consumers into profiles to create marketing campaigns. What are the limitations to a reductionist framework or is there an example of a universal message that was successful in reaching diverse audiences? #UWJ201#312
@top_left_tom Big companies tend to package their product to sell rather than inform. This is why marketing firms strive for successful transactions between products and consumers. They are enabled to persuade due to their ability to mold their ads to consumer demographics. #UWJ201#312
Despite the intention behind the likability principle of persuasion in the Nike commercial, I found that the quality of the advertisement and the overstimulation of different everyday people deterred me from the campaign. How does ad quality/style impact its messaging?#UWJ201#312
@MarleyComito Marley, riveting question. I think that scarcity is the most persuasive technique in product advertising because when something has the potential to be unattainable we desire it more. Thus, the risk in losing out on an opportunity to obtain newness draws us. #UWJ201#312
@jasperlindseyy I think that social media has enabled global movements and provide activists to speak out against oppressive governments. Yet its interesting to note how FB takes pride in provoking cultural change yet does not aid in preventing the chaos that subsided the uprisings. #UWJ201#312
@camilla_amberr I think there is a lack of awareness in how much power advertising entities have in their relationship with online platforms. Targeted media feeds perpetuate a cycle of selective exposure and thus do not help us but rather contribute to keeping us in filter bubbles. #UWJ201#312
In lecture we discussed how much of the news we consume from online platforms like Facebook are incidental. Does this news exposure really diversify our news consumption when the stories or news highlights we discover are from people within our personal networks? #UWJ201 #312
@Camila_Rivero_ I think deplatforming is not inevitable but more prominent in our era of "cancel culture." As a younger generation, we have less tolerance for bigoted behavior and thus we will have more regulations on speech. I wonder if this is a global phenomenon, thoughts? #UWJ201 #312
In discussion this week we talked about how private platforms have the right to deplatform hate speech, but what happens in the case of internationally regulating speech when different countries have varying rules on censorship? #UWJ201 #312
@JakeSteeves9 Deplatforming should be followed by offline action in order to address the spread of lies and fake news. Surveillance on these platforms only goes so far as it pushes deplatformees to the deep dark corners of the web where they continue to spread fake news.#UWJ201 #312
@Camila_Rivero_ I think the four journalistic standards are only enhanced by partisan news. For example, in the case of surveillance and interpretation news needs to be framed in a sensational way to hit with audiences but this is only enhanced by partisan/polarized media.
@sofdlv I think in today's political climate, the Onion is probably doing more harm than good because things online can be easily consumed. I think political satire was easily understood as comical in print but now that the platform has changed it has a different impact. #UWJ201#312
In lecture we discussed how one of the key functions of journalism in society is to keep those in power accountable. How do we go about keeping platforms accountable/ faceless entities as in the case of Facebook and its algorithms? #UWJ201 #312
@ScolmanSophia I think there is a liberal perception on conservatives because of the framing that news outlets emphasize about each side. It is the lack of local assessments and depleting local media for us to know that there may be a more diverse set of opinions in one area. #UWJ201 #312
@maggie_mantel The ease in having accessibility to information at the push of a button is appealing to younger generations than print newspaper or subscribing to web content. While social media might not allow us to retain info like traditional news, we are exposed to so much more. #UWJ201 #312
How do people in rural versus metropolitan areas in the US conceptualize elitism different? How does the type of media that these communities consume impact those perceptions? #UWJ201 #312
How have technological advancements and social media algorithms helped news outlets pick their top stories for publishing? Moreover, do likeminded opinions form because smaller news outlets refer to larger ones like the NYT for top headliners? #UWJ201 #312
@liana1520 Social media heavily influenced my perspective during the pandemic and the height of the BLM protests. I was exposed to a "media reality" of first hand accounts, expanding my awareness on issues that wouldn't be reported on in the same manner by partisan news outlets. #UWJ201#312
@LibbyLambdin The idea of a "for you page" on Tik Tok makes users feel they are getting a unique experience on the app with media exposure that fits their interests/humor. But now we are in an era of trends and like minded media that lessens are exposure to different perspective. #UWJ201 #312
The media effect states certain messages provoke us behaviorally and cognitively. I want to know whether the news channels on the right or the left prompt us with messages or do we seek affirmation in our beliefs through listening to one side over the other? #UWJ201 #312
