You always have self custody, anyone can contribute (you can be told you are not allowed to but nothing can actually stop you from doing so) and anyone can set up a crowdloan. The reward distribution may be centralised but the crowdloan is not.

@stokonomic @TheCryptoLark ETH2.0 is no longer a thing. There is no execution sharding. The roadmap includes POS (Q1/Q2 2022) and then data sharding. The roadmap now uses L2's for scaling. Fees stay high on L1, burning alot of ETH, L2's are cheap and where applications are built and users participate
