Democratic candidate Nafisa Fai was filmed speaking to a crowd in Somali in front of an upside-down American flag. But her team immediately claimed the footage was a deepfake. And the “fact-checkers” bought it.

Except.. the video was REAL. The only actual fake in this story was the image her campaign handed to the press to cover it up.

The upside-down flag is bad enough, but the precedent this sets is far worse.

Everyone warns that AI will make fake things look believably real, but that’s only half the danger. The other threat is that AI has now allowed us to call real things fake.

That gives every guilty person caught red-handed an instant escape hatch. You don't have to prove your innocence anymore. You can just yell "DEEPFAKE," and the media or people online eager to protect you will line up to hand you your alibi.
