Can God Restore Lost Years and Missed Opportunities?

Main Passage: “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25).

Introduction

There are few pains sharper than looking backward and seeing what you threw away, what was taken from you, or what you simply missed because you were blind, stubborn, scared, immature, wounded, or out of the will of God. A man can live with a lot of things, but regret has teeth. It gnaws in the dark. It shows up when the house gets quiet. It crawls into prayer time and whispers, “Too late.” It takes the wreckage of old decisions and builds a pulpit for the devil to preach from. And if you let him talk long enough, he will convince you that God can forgive sin but cannot recover waste, that God can save a soul but cannot redeem a timeline, and that grace is strong enough for yesterday’s guilt but too weak for tomorrow’s usefulness.

The Bible does not talk like that. The Bible does not flatter your wasted years, and it does not deny them either. It tells the truth. It says sin costs. It says sloth costs. It says rebellion costs. It says foolishness costs. It says unbelief costs. The locusts are real. The years are real. The missed chances are real. But then it says something only God can say: “And I will restore to you the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25). That verse is not a Hallmark slogan. That is God stepping into a ravaged field and saying, “I know what was lost, I know why it was lost, and I still know how to make this land bear fruit again.”

Now if you are going to understand restoration biblically, you have to let God define it. Restoration is not always God giving you the identical thing back in the identical form at the identical stage of life. Sometimes He does that. Sometimes He gives more. Sometimes He gives something different that is better fitted to His purpose. Sometimes He does not restore the exact opportunity, but He restores usefulness, joy, wisdom, peace, and fruitfulness in a way that makes the devil choke on his own accusations. Restoration is never God pretending the loss was not real. Restoration is God proving He is greater than the loss.

1. God Acknowledges Loss Before He Announces Restoration

One reason people get stuck in regret is because they think the only way to be spiritual is to deny the depth of the damage. The Bible never does that. God says “the years that the locust hath eaten” (Joel 2:25). He does not say, “There really was no loss.” He names the loss. He names the devouring. He names the years. That matters, because biblical hope is not built on pretending. It is built on truth. The Lord is not asking you to smile over ashes and call them roses. He is asking you to bring the ashes to Him and let Him decide what He can grow there.

Scripture is full of people who lost years. Moses lost forty years in the backside of the desert before God sent him back to Egypt (Acts 7:23, 30). Naomi lost a husband, lost sons, and came home saying, “Call me not Naomi, call me Mara: for the Almighty hath dealt very bitterly with me” (Ruth 1:20). David lost years to caves, running like a fugitive while a throne had already been promised to him. Israel lost whole generations in the wilderness because of unbelief. The Bible does not erase those chapters. It records them so that no saint can say, “My case is too ruined for God to address.”

And the first step in restoration is honesty. If you play games, hide the waste, rename the sin, blame everyone else, or turn your past into a sentimental story about “what made me who I am,” you are still feeding locusts. The Bible says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy” (Proverbs 28:13). Mercy starts where excuses end. God restores truth-tellers, not spin doctors.

2. Lost Years Can Come From Sin, Suffering, or Both

Some years are lost because you sinned. Some are lost because somebody else
