Police guided the grieving mother of Rhiannon Whyte to tone down her public statements after her 27-year-old daughter was stabbed 23 times with a screwdriver by Sudanese asylum seeker Deng Chol Majek. They explicitly did not want another Southport.

Rhiannon was butchered while waiting at Bescot Stadium railway station in Walsall after finishing her shift. Majek, who had arrived in the UK by small boat just three months earlier, then spent the night dancing and drinking in the car park of the Park Inn Hotel where she worked.

When the family told police they were turning off Rhiannon’s life support, officers rushed to remove other migrants from that same hotel.

Siobhan Whyte has said she was aggressive in her initial grief and that police guided the family to soften the language so the statements did not come across as too aggressive. She is grateful for some of the practical help she received from officers, but she has also called out the Prime Minister for having blood on his hands.

A mother whose daughter was murdered in one of the most brutal ways imaginable should never have been pressured in her darkest moments to water down her anger for the sake of social cohesion.

She has every right to be furious. She has every right to say exactly what she thinks about the man who slaughtered her child and about the system that let him into the country in the first place.

One of “Britain’s first gay dads” and his husband have been charged with 18 further offences, including rape and paying for the sexual services of a child.

Reality TV figure Barrie Drewitt‑Barlow, 57, and his partner Scott Hutchinson, 32, were arrested after police raided their Essex mansion last month.

The pair appeared at Chelmsford Crown Court today accused of multiple offences including rape, sexual assault and modern slavery trafficking for sexual exploitation.

The alleged offending, said to have taken place in Essex and Manchester between April 2013 and January this year, relates to four men. Both men previously pleaded not guilty.

Essex Police confirmed ahead of the hearing that the couple had now been charged with a further 18 offences.

Drewitt‑Barlow faces an additional 15 counts, including sexual activity with a child, paying for sexual services of a child, rape, sexual assault, causing an individual to engage in sexual activity and causing or inciting sexual activity.

Hutchinson faces two further counts of rape and one of causing or inciting sexual activity.

A court heard earlier that the pair allegedly “recruited” young men before grooming them and subjecting them to sexual assaults including rape.

Prosecutor Serena Berry described the couple as “what could be termed to be celebrities, who live multi‑million‑pound lifestyles and have featured in many documentaries and reality TV shows”.

She said they own Maldon and Tiptree FC as well as other businesses in Essex and abroad.

She added: “It is alleged they have both targeted young males, they have recruited them, they have befriended them, they have groomed them. They have invited them to their home and other premises.”

Drewitt‑Barlow is charged with three counts of sexual assault on a male, four counts of rape of a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel of another person with a view to exploitation.

Hutchinson faces one count of sexual assault on a male, one count of rape of a man aged 16 or over, and two counts of arranging or facilitating travel with a view to exploitation.

Defence barrister Oliver Snodin said the allegations are “strenuously denied”.

Drewitt‑Barlow bought non‑league Maldon and Tiptree FC in February 2022 and had been due to appear in an ITV documentary about the club. The series Up The Jammers has since been pulled.

Police also raided the Drewitt‑Barlow Stadium yesterday following the couple’s arrest.

Barrie made history with ex‑partner Tony in 1999 as one of Britain’s first gay dads.

The pair became the first same‑sex parents to be listed on birth certificates as “parent one” and “parent two”.
