Weakening of the African Man: A Guide to African Masculinity by Brian Olago is a thought provoking book it examines the changing meaning of masculinity in Africa and asks a difficult question: what has happened to the traditional African man?
It explores traditional and modern masculinity, the influence of Western ideas, changing cultural practices, leadership, fatherhood, relationships, feminism, personal development and the responsibilities traditionally associated with African men.
The book argues that African masculinity is historically connected to responsibility, discipline, resilience, provision, protection and leadership, while modern social and cultural changes have challenged some of these expectations.
It also examines how economic hardship, cultural transformation, fatherlessness and changing gender expectations have affected young men and their understanding of identity and purpose.
A major idea in the book is the “masculine frame”a combination of confidence, responsibility, ambition, maturity and self discipline that the author believes men must deliberately develop.
The book challenges men to understand their history and culture, build valuable skills, pursue personal growth, take responsibility for their choices and develop a clear sense of purpose.
Weakening of the African Man opens an important conversation about African identity, masculinity, relationships, culture and the kind of men society is producing today.
Ultimately, it is presented as a guide for African men seeking direction, self development and a stronger connection with their roots and responsibilities.
