This letter from @HarrietOpoma broke my heart.

Here is a young Kenyan who went to school, worked hard, graduated with a degree, and has spent 10 years trying to find a breakthrough without success. Behind many smiles you see out here, there are painful private battles people rarely talk about.

Many young people are exhausted, not because they are lazy, but because opportunities have become so difficult to access.

I am sharing Harriet’s letter with hope that someone somewhere may help open a door for her.

Kenyans are currently paying more income tax as individuals than companies pay in corporate tax.

PAYE currently stands at up to 35%, compared to 30% corporate tax, leaving workers with less take-home pay.

The proposed 5% PAYE reduction would help correct the imbalance, ease pressure on households, and improve disposable income for workers.

A fairer tax system should support both workers and economic growth.

On this day, 18 years ago, on 12 May 2008, I published my first article in the @NationAfrica challenging the injustice of odious debt.

I argued then, as I do now, that debts incurred against the interests of the people cannot morally or legally be imposed on generations that never consented to them.

Africa must stop begging for relief from debts designed to enrich a few and impoverish millions. We must audit, question, repudiate, and prosecute where necessary.

Odious debt is not development. It is economic capture. The struggle continues.
