«وطنم جوابم کرد»

سال‌ها پیش از مرگش در ۵۴ سالگی، از بیمارستان مسلولین برلین به عمویش نوشته بود؛
خوب به گذشته فکر می‌کنم به نظرم می‌آید مدت زیادی است که زندگی می‌کنم.

و در انتهای نامه آورد:

«چه قدر باید آدم‌ها را ببینم که با آرزوهایشان مدفون می‌شوند؟»

بعدها در گفتگویی تصویری از او پرسیدند؛ به نظر شما سهراب شهید ثالث چطور آدمی است؟

در پاسخ به این شعر ناظم حکمت اشاره کرد که؛ دربدری پیشه‌ای است بس دشوار.
و گفت:

«سهراب کسی است که از همان جوانی دربدری را یاد گرفت و عادت کرد با آن زندگی کند»

همین بود که پنج سال پیش از مرگش در مصاحبه با “کلک” گفت فرق نمی‌کند آدم کجای این دنیا زندگی کند.

«درد همه جا هست. منتها بعضی از ما یاد می‌گیریم این درد را قورت دهیم و هرگز نشان ندهیم»/۱
