The only people who glamorize poverty and claim they learned “grit” from it are those who never experienced poverty.

People who actually did, know that you just become chronically sick and mentally anxious because you could never afford a healthy, stable life,

they know you just pick up a bunch of foolish habits from a low-trust environment that you need to unlearn later in life if you want a shot at building loving relationships,

they know you spend many years just to escape the crab bucket of all the people who thought that if they couldn’t have it, you couldn’t have it either,

they know you could never invest in anything long-term because your family was always living from paycheck to paycheck despite living the most frugal lifestyle possible,

they know you never had the chance to travel or experience anything that cost even just a bit of money, and ended up becoming close-minded, dogmatic, and brainwashed.

You will occasionally hear the stories of a few “survivors” who beat the odds and made it, but they succeeded in spite of their unfavorable circumstances, and would have likely achieved much more if they had spent less time on worrying about basic survival, or dealing with people who lacked basic common sense.

The world is full of obliviously dishonest people who don’t tell the whole story; tons of successful people will tell you that you need to suffer to make it, but they are usually not talking about the same kind of sufferings that you have to overcome when you start from the actual very bottom.
