Syria cannot be turned into an Islamic Iran or an Islamic Afghanistan. Syrian society is different: it is more open and more diverse, regardless of who is in power.

There are Syrians who dance and drink alcohol, and there are Syrians who practice Islamic preaching and religious outreach. We cannot hide the fact that there are ideological differences between different groups of Syrians, but these differences have not reached the level of confrontation where one side seeks to eliminate the other.

All of this is connected to the transformation of Ahmed AlSharaa, a young man who was born into a secular Arab nationalist family.

استمعت لمقاطع من مقابلة حديثة مع هذا الرجل، وأتساءل بجدية: هل هو ساذج ومغرور فقط أم يصنفه الأطباء العقليون مصابا بمرض عقلي؟ كنت أسمع به من بداية الثورة السورية بصفته طبيبا ومعتقلا سابقا وأحد وجوه المعارضة الذين تستضيفهم الفضائيات، وكان يكتب مقالات في النقد الديني، ظننتُ عندما اطلعت على أحدها أنه ملحد ثم تبين أنه من زنادقة التيار الشحروري الذين يحاولون "تحديث" الإسلام فقط.
أتفهم الصدمة العميقة التي أصيب بها الكثير من المعارضين العلمانيين المتطرفين بعد سقوط النظام على يد الجهاديين، وصعوبة تقبل انهيار كل أحلامهم بالحصول على كعكة من السلطة كما كانوا يتأمّلون طوال سنوات الثورة، لكن لم أتخيل أن تتطور الصدمة لدى أحدهم إلى لوثة عقلية. المسكين يزعم أن لديه مليشيا من مئتي ألف مقاتل على الأرض وينتظرون الفرصة لإقصاء السلطة الحالية.
أتساءل حقا هل هو مجنون رسميًا أم أن بعض الظرفاء تلاعبوا به وأقنعوه بأنه رئيس الظل لسوريا، ثم لم يستطع كتمان السر وخرج ليتباهى به؟
