Fantastic advice!! I will never forget the advice from the incredible Dr. Becky Baron during my BWH intern orientation:
1. Donโt stand when you can sit
2. Donโt sit when you can lay down
3. Never pass up the opportunity to eat a donut
Thinking about leaving medicine? Thatโs fine. However donโt walk away empty handed, finish the stage youโre in. Medical school, residency or fellowshipโฆ complete something.
The grass isnโt always greener one day you might need that credential or skill you almost had.
Be wise.
Med students, I think the best way to do all this is to imagine the most competitive specialty you could possibly be interested from day 1 and work your ass off to be competitive for it. Even if you decide it isnโt what you want to do, youโll be set up well for anything else
The USMLEs teach you several things:
- How to handle extreme pressure.
- How push to memory span beyond its limits.
- What to do when uncertain.
- How to keep going when exhausted.
- How to turn impossible to possible.
- How to rebuild after failing a 46 question block.
Reportedly, Dr. Mohammad Awan, a Pakistani-origin physician, has successfully passed the USMLE Step 1 exam at the remarkable age of 71. Having practiced medicine in multiple countries including Pakistan, UAE, and the UK, he chose to challenge himself and test his knowledge and skills.
Dr. Awanโs achievement is a powerful reminder that age is just a number, through hard work, discipline, and determination, anything is possible. Congratulations to Dr. Awan and his family on this inspiring milestone!
