SFI welcomes Complexity Postdoctoral Fellow Maike Morrison.
@MaikeMorrison develops mathematical tools to quantify and compare biological variation — from species in ecosystems, to microbes in the gut, to ancestral lineages in humans. Her work draws on ecology, population genetics, and information theory to study the structure, diversity, and stability of populations.

So many terrific talks and posters today at #SMBE2024! I especially enjoyed this zine from @pleunipennings... conferences would be more fun with more zines
I'm stoked to be at #SMBE2024! If you're interested in variability/diversity, microbiomes, and/or non-traditional applications of FST, I would love to chat!
Poster Weds #44, title: Quantifying the stability of microbiomes and the timescale of antibiotic perturbation with FAVA
Hi #ESA2023 ! Come learn about the dynamics of colonization and community recovery in the human gut microbiome at my talk tomorrow, COS 87-2, at 10:15am in room E142.
We see long lags in colonization even after major antibiotic perturbations. I'd love to discuss why!
I'll briefly discuss my analysis of some incredible data recently generated by @ksxue. To hear her exciting results about colonization & transmission dynamics in microbial communities, check out her talk tomorrow!
Tues 8/8 - 10:15am - E142

Hey #ESA2023! Interested in quantifying community stability or heterogeneity? I'm presenting a statistic to quantify variability across multiple relative abundance vectors (collab w/ @NoahARosenberg and @ksxue). I'd love to chat!

Just got home from a terrific 1.5-month visit at @IARCWHO! Huge thank you to the @CancersRare team, especially @nl_alcala, for the opportunity. Exciting science and kind, generous people in a beautiful French city... could it get any better?

Excited to share my first project of grad school, with @NoahARosenberg and @nl_alcala, “FSTruct: an Fst -based tool for measuring ancestry variation in inference of population structure.” https://t.co/PxeFWer2U9 1/
On my way home, realizing I will really miss the Santa Fe/Albuquerque area--the storms and sunsets, mountains and plains, art and architecture, food and culture. What a treat to spend a month in such an amazing place! Catch me craving green chile for the next year...
So, so grateful for the chance to attend the @sfiscience Complex Systems Summer School over the last few weeks. Hard to say goodbye to such dear friends/math buddies/collaborators. Project updates below! 🧵
Second, a stretch project for me--connecting scaling laws and time perception across life. Highlights included exciting chats with @ChrisKempes and Geoffrey West.

Next up, #ScalingLaws & #Time#Perception: studying flicker fusion threshold (fps) for different organisms, which varies greatly.

Highlight of @sfiscience#CSSS was this group of brilliant and intellectually diverse scientists. Can’t wait to see what new works comes out of these friendships!
I knew #PEQG22 was going to be fun, but not *that* fun! Huge thanks to the conference organizers and @GeneticsGSA for an amazing week. I'm so grateful to be in a field where people are not only doing exciting research, but are also so welcoming, kind, and encouraging.
If you're at #PEQG22 and you're interested in population structure, variability measures, and/or non-standard applications of FST, I'd love to chat at my poster (286T) on Thursday!
2022 is the 50th anniversary of Lewontin’s “The apportionment of human diversity." (L72 hereafter.) Today a special issue is published celebrating L72, appearing in Phil Trans B @RSocPublishing (co-editors myself, @s_ramach, @NoahARosenberg) (1/n) https://t.co/V1VTJBgcud
