At the end of each half (in normal time and extra time), the #referee adds on the playing time that was ‘lost’ in that half because of:
➡️ substitutions
➡️ injuries
➡️ time-wasting
➡️ disciplinary action
➡️ goal celebrations
➡️ drinks and cooling breaks
➡️ delays for VAR checks and reviews
➡️ other major delays (e.g. due to interference by spectators, floodlight failure, etc.)

The referee:
➡️ makes allowance for time ‘lost’ only when delays are excessive (many stoppages in play are natural)
➡️ cautions (yellow card) players who unfairly delay the restart of play
➡️ increases the amount of additional time for any stoppages during additional time itself

A goalkeeper catches the ball inside their penalty area and is not challenged by any opponent, so the #referee starts the eight-second countdown.

I'm no soccer expert, but I think the MLS would be wise to Americanize the game. Why not? They're not going to surpass the Euro leagues anyway.
