#educ3220#becomingmath One thing I learned from this book is that math is more important than we think. It’s not all about numbers, it’s about collaboration with one another to work together to solve problems.
@MeanMrMeehan I really enjoy this idea. Then once they see their mistakes they can assess themselves and find a way to fix it or try a new way like you said! #octmchat
A3: Math notebooks. Asking open-ended questions that allow students to really dig deep to justify their own answers. This way you can see privately the thinking behind each individual #octmchat
Hello my name is Makenna Allmon and I am a junior at Otterbein University majoring in early childhood education with an endorsement in 4th and 5th grade! I am passionate about experimenting new ways for students to understand math! #octmchat
#EDUC3220#becomingmath I love the idea of buddy checks! It is so much easier to catch another’s mistake than your own. This way students can get more insight from others and learn from them too.
A4: When I have my own classroom, I will have the manipulatives out and in reach for the students. It is important for them to be accessible at any time for student use! #octmchat
@cincy_mathanne I agree! Snap cubes are my favorite right now. Being able to have the cubes combine into one it more helpful than it appears. Makes it a lot easier for students too by not having them in a messy bunch!
@jrsteach Yes I agree!! It is so much fun seeing students have that “light bulb moment” when they share their thinking through hands on material. Finding different ways for students to understand is important. Not all students learn the same way.
A2: Manipulatives are helpful for students and teachers to explain your thinking. Rather than explaining “lines on a paper” you can explain your thinking through hands on materials! #octmchat
A1: I think that it is so important to have manipulatives in the classroom. Especially in math. Math is a difficult subject for some students, therefore if they can have hands on materials it can help them understand the content better! #octmchat
