SAD NEWS: Yesterday night, armed bandits carried out coordinated attacks on Yar Bulutu, Gajit, Alkalawa, Garin Magaji, and Damba communities all in Sabon-Birni LGA of Sokoto State. Multiple residents were killed, several others injured, and a number of people were abducted.

Local sources and community members have expressed concern that recent arrangements in neighbouring Shinkafi LGA (Zamfara State) particularly the reported truce with bandits under the Bello Turji faction, may be contributing to heightened attacks across Isa and Sabon-Birni LGAs (Sokoto State). These concerns are still based on community observations and have not yet been officially confirmed.

Someone apparently advised the government to grant import waivers for rice, maize, and other food items, rather than redirecting the savings from removing PMS subsidies toward supporting agriculture, incentivizing farmers, generating more jobs, and expanding on the farmer incentives from the previous administration.

Raw materials like paddy have become scarce, PMS prices have surged, fertilizers and herbicides are more expensive, and insecurity persists in some arable lands. These issues have driven a sharp rise in food prices over the past two years, which is obvious.

Such short-term policies risk crippling local farmers and industries that borrowed billions of Naira to invest in milling operations, ultimately dragging down the economy. The government must urgently review this situation and immediately suspend the importation of these food items.
