Seven months into the U.S. war on Iran, fighting has widened and the consequences have spread far beyond Iran’s borders.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, rising insecurity in the Red Sea, and pressure on energy markets are felt in the Gulf, Lebanon, Syria, and the Horn of Africa.

The current multilateral world order has struggled against the double standards of great powers, who have stripped multilateral institutions of their influence, shaped the rules to their advantage, and follow them only when it suits.
Today at UNGA 81, Open Society hosted conversations with municipal government officials, civil society and philanthropy leaders, policymakers, and more to tackle some of the central questions facing the international system.
A new model of multilateralism is emerging as new coalitions of middle powers and countries of the Global South come together around demands for shared prosperity and sovereignty. Discussions focused on exercising their leadership in regional security, international financial reform, and rights reform, and advancing local models of peace, public safety, and reconstruction shaped by communities.
Meet Nation Station: A grassroots initiative born in response to the Beirut Port explosion in 2020 that continues to show up for its communities.
The day after one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in history, Geitawi
neighborhood resident Josephine Abou Abdo and four of her neighbors gathered at an abandoned gas station on their street. They quickly started organizing, turning the gas station into a distribution point for crowdsourced bottled water, fresh fruits and vegetables, tarps, and cooked meals.
Nation Station, an Open Society grantee, became a staple in the neighborhood, with its restaurant introducing apertivo nights, hosted by migrant or refugee community kitchens to cook their specialty dishes, to generate revenue to subsidize food distribution programs.
In 2024, as the war between Israel and Hezbollah destroyed homes and infrastructure across south Lebanon, the mutual aid group launched an emergency response, cooking more than 4,000 meals a day and sending them to shelters in Beirut and Mount Lebanon.
In 2026, as Israel has continued to launch attacks on southern Lebanon and other areas, triggering a mass displacement crisis that has overwhelmed state and international relief efforts, Nation Station distributed about 20,000 food packages a week to vulnerable households in heavily impacted areas.
Despite the widespread destruction of homes and livelihoods and the daily threat of violence, communities in Lebanon are still coming together to support those in need.

When we came into office, we uncovered a $12 billion budget deficit.
Today, I’m proud to say we brought it down to zero.
We didn’t close the gap on the backs of working people.
We closed it while funding parks, libraries, safer streets and making historic investments in public housing.
Call it Pothole Politics. Call it Democratic Socialism. It's government that delivers for the people who make this city run.
That’s what New Yorkers deserve. And that’s what we will keep fighting for every single day.

"We're rejecting the political parties that are funded by billionaires."
Hannah Spencer, the Green party's newest MP, has said that their victory in Gorton and Denton shows that people no longer want to vote for political parties that have shut out normal people in favour of protecting the vested interests of the wealthy.
"They have taken people's votes for granted", Spencer said.

Please, read books. Not just captions, or carousel posts, or what made it to the top of your feed. Read books. Long ones. Complex ones. You cannot build a mind with weight on the back of social media ephemerals. Intellectual depth demands patience.
A year ago, Zohran Mamdani was polling at 1%. He took on the entire Democratic establishment and built a grassroots movement of 90,000 New Yorkers.
And, with your hard work, over the next eight days, this young man is going to make American history.

The brazen targeted killing of Palestinian journalists Anas Al-Sharif & Mohammad Qreiqeh, along with 4 other media workers, highlights the unimaginable peril Palestinian journalists in Gaza face, and the Israeli military’s complete disregard for civilian life.
