As a Medical Laboratory Scientist in Hematology & Blood Transfusion, here are 5 important things every Nigerian should know

1️⃣ Not every patient needs “blood.”

Sometimes patients only need a specific blood component:
• Packed red cells
• Plasma
• Platelets
• Cryoprecipitate

Modern transfusion medicine focuses on giving only what the patient truly needs — not unnecessary whole blood.

2️⃣ Blood group compatibility is serious business.

Giving the wrong blood can lead to severe transfusion reactions, kidney failure, shock, or even death.

That is why blood grouping, crossmatching, and compatibility testing must NEVER be rushed.
