🚨 Fifteen (15) Facts About Wasila and the Ololu Masquerade Incident in Ibadan, Nigeria

When social media erupted a few days ago over the case involving Wasila, the daughter of Sakeenah, and the Ololu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, I decided to study the situation closely.

As a photojournalist who has documented numerous cultural and traditional festivals across Nigeria and Africa, I chose not to make any public observations until I had gathered evidence and compared the various accounts surrounding the incident.

After several days of reviewing available information and speaking with relevant sources, these are the key findings:

1. Wasila recorded a video from her apartment during the Ololu Festival and posted it on TikTok with the caption: “Ololu is around here…”

2.The video did not show the Ololu masquerade itself. According to those familiar with the video, she was simply informing people to be cautious while moving around the area.

3. There is no evidence that Wasila disguised herself as a man to record the video.

4. Some TikTok users considered the video offensive and asked her to delete it. She subsequently removed the video from her account.

5. According to multiple accounts, members of the Ololu entourage, popularly known as Sokoti, later traced Wasila to her apartment. The situation reportedly escalated until security personnel intervened, after which she spent the night in police custody.

6. She was granted bail and released the following day.

7. It has been alleged that some Ololu worshippers requested that traditional sacrificial rites be performed on her, despite claims that she was not a practitioner of the religion.

8. There is no verified evidence that Wasila was bleeding from any part of her body before her arrest or before the alleged ritual.

9. According to those familiar with the incident, her family was instructed to provide a goat, razor blades, and white cloth for the traditional rites.

10. It has been alleged that her hair was publicly shaved, she was made to carry a goat around her neck to the ritual site, and the goat was slaughtered while she held it, with its blood reportedly smeared on her body.

11. Reports also claim that after the ritual, she was asked to appear on a live stream, state that she had been bleeding, and dance around the ritual site.

12. A reported penalty of ₦400,000 was allegedly paid by Wasila’s husband through Opay over her perceived actions. A payment receipt is said to exist.

13. Claims circulated online that Wasila had died. However, she is alive, and it was later discovered that even one of her friends had shared the false report.

14. Wasila’s original TikTok account was mass-reported and eventually banned.

15. She has since opened a new TikTok account, where she publicly refuted the rumours of her death.
