University of The Gambia Students Launch Jokko9 App to Ease Phone Number Migration

Three final-year Computer Science students at the University of The Gambia have developed a practical app to help citizens update their contacts ahead of a major national phone number change.

Sulayman Colley, Mamadou Bah and Alasan Saine created Jokko9 in response to The Gambia’s shift from 7-digit to 9-digit phone numbers, which begins next month. The change requires adding new prefixes to every saved number. For users with hundreds or even a thousand contacts, the manual process would be time-consuming and error-prone.

Jokko9 automatically converts existing contacts into the new 9-digit format, eliminating the need to edit numbers one by one. The students designed the utility specifically for Gambian users and have already presented the project to the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA).

The team is now working to expand availability, with a particular focus on bringing Jokko9 to the Apple App Store so iPhone users can also benefit. They are seeking public support to complete this final step.

By building a simple, locally relevant tool, the three students aim to make the nationwide transition smoother for as many Gambians as possible.
