Witness I was confronted with WhatsApp messages (CJC 220, pages 226-227) between Brown Mogotsi and Mr. Matlala. On 29 January 2025, Mogotsi reported the meeting was "positive" and said "I think he needs cash." Matlala responded: "Okay, arrange with Khan to give him cash, if the information he has is worth it." Witness I maintained he never spoke to Matlala and only communicated with Captain Zungu. The Commissioner noted that Zungu told him the meeting was "facilitated by Mr. Matlala," questioning why Zungu would mention Matlala if there was no prior connection. The Commissioner also pointed out that Witness I's supplementary statement disclosed he lived in Matlala's family property for two years (from September 2023) after Zungu arranged it—suggesting a closer relationship than he represented. The Commissioner put to Witness I that he may have been "grateful" to Matlala for providing security and accommodation, and was now willing to do him a favor.
