Random Thought… participated in my first protest because it was about making Kenya a better place.

I have never participated in any demos before because I always felt they were partisan, political and full of vandalism and looting. It’s not even clear how the decisions to protest were made. I imagine a few men sat in a room and picked a day for protests.

But this time round, you could log in and listen into the conversations. So, I had been listening to GenZ conversations on the XSpaces and I realized that the conversation was mainly about issues that resonate deeply. The GenZ protest is mainly about an unjust society that works for a few, that’s why it resonates with so many Kenyans; #RejectFinanceBill2024 is merely a rallying cry.

Put simply, they are totally fed up with a deeply flawed and unjust order of affairs in Kenya:

1.They are fed up with an order that GLORIFIES corruption, mediocrity, thieves, tenderprenuers, ethnic chauvinists, charlatans and liars while leaving freshly graduated doctors jobless after 20 years of schooling. The thought leaders in XSpaces are mostly highly educated but yet highly UNDERemployed brilliant young women and men.

2.They are fed up with an order that HOLDS BACK innovators, teachers, doctors, nurses, entrepreneurs, the educated, the straight players, the unconnected, and those without heritage.

The issue is simply about a more just society that works for all!

And when we got to the protest, it was encouraging that most of those that I managed to speak with had never also been to any demos, but they felt that this one was speaking to their deep frustrations. I met doctors, entrepreneurs, analysts, nurses, lawyers, engineers, you name it, and mostly young and middleclass, the type you never expect to see in Kenyan demos. There were nurses dressed in scrubs who used their lunch break to come protest. No one cared about tribe, class or party affiliation, the common goal was simply a deep yearning for change. A yearning that THEY NEVER KNEW HOW TO ARTICULATE until GenZ showed us the way.

It’s unfortunate that innocent young people lost their lives in the course of venting their frustrations. I hope that GenZ will keep up the push for a more just national order and most importantly enlist baby boomers, GenX like myself, and the millennials into a PEACEFUL struggle to make Kenya a better place for its citizens and a beacon of hope and prosperity in Africa.

The protest was NOT about #RejectFinanceBill2024, that was just a rallying cry. The protest was about a deeply unjust society under a tone deaf leadership.

Hope to share, soon, some random thoughts on what I saw on the protest fields and the specific issues that took me to protest. May God bless our country.

Did you see how we sang ‘Kudade’ with Mc Gogo?
Did you see how Juliani turned up and we sang ‘Utawala’?
That song you call ‘Nikoo njaa siwezi karanga’?
Did you hear us sing ‘Tujiangalie’by Sauti Sol?
Have you seen King Kaka’s ‘ Wanataka Kutumaliza’?
Did you see how Mulamwah gave us Tea and Mandazi?
Have you seen all the comedians, Content creators and influencers?
I told you it will be Big Mama!

We matched forward Mama Slowly and peacefully Like you told me
We said we were peaceful
They rattled us with teargas and water canons Mama
We coughed, cried and chocked to the smoke but still matched on
We matched amidst the sting of that pink water they sprayed on us with those beastly vehicles
But nothing was more painful than hearing them pass that draconian punitive Bill Mama.
Remember how you used to forcefully give us porridge by locking us between your legs, pinching our noses then pouring a tone of porridge in our forcibly opened mouth?
Leaving us with two choices; swallowing or choking to death?
That’s what they did to us yesterday Mama
But unlike in the past, today’s child chose the latter; death!

We approached the parliament as promised.
We eventually occupied Parliament Mama
Albeit briefly.
The wall gave in and we entered.
I’m sorry I did not taste the rice
As some did Mama
All I tasted was the bullets Mama
They sprayed me with bullets Mama,
That’s why i won’t come home.
My battle is over Mama
But not the revolutionary war.
