Agreed. Just read this yesterday. Letter of St Dionysius to a priest, Sopratos... "Do not imagine this a victory, holy Sopatros, to have denounced a devotion, or an opinion, which apparently is not good. *For neither—even if you should have convicted it accurately—are the (teachings) of Sopatros consequently good.* For it is possible, both that you and others, whilst occupied in many things that are false and apparent, should overlook the true, which is One and hidden. For neither, if anything is not red, is it therefore white, nor if something is not a horse, is it necessarily a man. But thus will you do, if you follow my advice, you will cease indeed to speak against others, but will so speak on behalf of truth, that every thing said is altogether unquestionable."

@JoshuaTCharles Yes. My wife did this. I told her, “This is my nightmare” & didn’t expect her to go down the path I thought I might be heading. She didn’t like it. But, she said I was her husband & would explore with me. Made both of us better. Kept me honest & challenged me the whole way.
@charleybrown77 Yep. Reading St Francis de Sales yesterday on a similar topic. When wondering why something hard/bad is happening - what’s God doing, what’s the purpose - a good enough answer is “because, reasons”. Busted up laughing.
@MrCasey62 Correct. It becomes Gnostic... Mormon. In my Reformed days was so disappointed that this self-authenticating argument was also used by Calvin. Not reasonable. Not compelling.
