Sideways markets are normal. This is 100% true. But, here is the issue:-
The Indian market has not been sideways for the last 2 years. We have lost massively due to currency depreciation. And, are therefore, net negative.
To be precise, last 2 years we have lost 15%, even if Nifty chart shows 0% sideways.
There are 2 ways to process this:-
1) A violent rebound will happen ("catch up") rally. And mean reversion will take care of things.
This is quite plausible.
2) We have no massive growth options. So what we are seeing is a re-rating of our markets.
Indian markets have traditionally traded at expensive valuations. And, the current decline is an adjustment. This is also logical.
As investors, we need to keep an eye out for both possibilities.
Over the past many years, I have taken a personal stand in support of the NEET examination, arguing that it brought uniformity in student selection across the country and gave students from underprivileged backgrounds a real shot at pursuing their dream of medical education. In the last 5 years, the NEET UG question paper has leaked thrice. Imagine the amount of pressure that it puts on students, who had to go through the examination process yet another time when the system that was supposed to bring in uniformity was failing. Yet there was no accountability, and I believe strongly that it was that moment that brought in a shift in the minds of the students to take to the streets to cry their hearts out.
Protest is a fundamental right in a Democracy. The pertinent question, however, is this: why did the BJP-led Central Government take so long to initiate a dialogue with the protestors? Why was meaningful engagement delayed until the protest had escalated to a flashpoint? What kept you waiting?
The students and the people who are leading them also have a responsibility here. It is natural that when a protest stays on for weeks, people with vested interests will take the stage to air views that are either completely irrelevant to the initial demands of the protests or would try to completely hijack it to serve their agenda. If you remain silent and let these people with vested interests further their agenda, then you are deviating from your core objectives. Please do not let it happen!
I urge the BJP-led Central Government to engage in meaningful dialogue, uphold transparency, and take swift, appropriate action to address the concerns at hand. The strength of any nation lies in the confidence its youth place in its institutions. If our students lose faith in the fairness and credibility of our education system, we are jeopardising the future of our nation.
Expensive real estate destroys demographics. Any society that traps its young people in debt, because of expensive education or expensive housing or expensive health care (or all of the above in many cases) is a society that is destroying its own demographic future.
If you love children, enable lower cost of living for prospective parents.
When Argentina's visionary President Javier Milei started slashing wasteful government expenditure, traditional Keynesian economists predicted doom. Reported GDP fell at first, but now GDP is growing again and he has also converted a massive budget deficit to a small surplus for the first time in a century.
We have to completely revise our notion of "GDP" (easily inflated by massive government spending because the spending directly adds to reported GDP) and "Jobs" (token distribution jobs aka bullshit jobs). Just as companies can show revenue while piling up debt, politicians can show "GDP growth" while pushing government finances towards insolvency.
Keynesian economics has conferred a veneer of respect on such government profligacy and it is time to challenge it. We must not grant automatic respect to economic "experts" with fancy academic credentials.
Argentina offers a very useful case study in the modern era. I follow it closely.
I recently returned from visiting several countries in Europe. Everything feels like a cut, copy, and paste with very small differences.
In contrast, India is more like a continent than a country. The diversity in terms of languages, food, culture, etc., between the 28 states and within each state is nuts.
Every time I think of this, I am amazed at how the country actually came together.
I had shared this earlier 👇
