Hockey Parents: If there is one thing you can do to help your kid develop a love and passion for the game, it would be to have a positive, encouraging car ride home.
For my money, the car ride home is just as important…if not more…than anything a coach does on the ice for your kid’s development.
We've been really fortunate to have a lot of NHL players on our podcast and every one we make sure to ask what their car ride home was like with their mom or dad growing up.
And for every single one of them, it was positive.
It was encouraging. They didn't coach. They just loved to watch them play and were supportive of their goals and dreams.
When we're developing kids to play at higher levels, passion is a prerequisite. Of all the players I’ve been fortunate to play with or coach that played at those levels, the one consistency in all of them was their love for the game.
You have to love the game to put in the work necessary to withstand the inevitable ups and downs that come with the journey. And there's nothing that sucks the love out of the game more than a negative car ride home.
A positive car ride home is everything.
“When your best player is your hardest worker it takes everyone to a different level. He’s the first one here in the morning . The last guy to leave. The work he puts in translates to the locker room and the rest of the building,” George Paton on Russell Wilson

Back to work!🔥
I get messages from minor hockey coaches saying they can’t work on some fundamental skills because parents get mad and say “my kids way to advanced for that”
Here’s two NHL 1st rounders , working on and getting better at…receiving passes.

Adversity doesn’t always have to be stressful when you love what you do.
“I’m coaching in the best league in the world having the time of my life. You can’t look at this as stress, look at this as fun, embrace it, see what happens,” Jon Cooper.
